Richard Zimmerman, 71

Services for Richard Zimmerman, 71 of Beatrice, who died at Beatrice Manor October 7, 1994, were Monday, October 10, at St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice. Rev. Doug Gunkelman and Rev. Richard R. Fruehling officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Home Cemetery at Beatrice with military graveside honors conducted by Bitting-Norman American Legion Post No. 27 of Beatrice.

Richard Zimmerman was born November 11, 1922, at rural Beatrice. He graduated from Virginia High school at Virginia.

He was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Navy from December, 1942, until January, 1946. He was stationed on the YMS-380 Mine Sweeper, which was the first vessel involved in the Invasion of Normandy.

He worked for the Natural Gas Pipeline north of Beatrice from October 16, 1952, until his retirement in March, 1986.

He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice where he was a church usher, past member of the church choir and Lutheran Brotherhood and had served on the Parish Education Committee.

He was a former member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, northeast of Beatrice.

He was a member of Bitting-Norman American Legion Post No. 27 and Geddes-Thober Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1077 and was a past member of the BPO Elks Lodge No. 619, all of Beatrice.

He married Ruby Brandt October 5, 1947, at St. John Lutheran Church at Beatrice.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Reinder and Gertrude Miller Zimmerman; a twin brother, Reynold and another brother, Marvin.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby; a daughter and her husband, Judy and Roger Mathiesen of Blair; granddaughter and her husband, Kari and Kurt Loseke, granddaughter, Kristin Mathiesen and grandson, Mitchell Mathiesen, all of Blair and sisters, Wilma Stevens and Elda Walker and her husband, Dean, all of Beatrice.

A memorial has been established to St. John Lutheran Church and the Hospice Foundation of the Beatrice Community Hospital with Robert Muehling and Reiner Andreesen in charge.

Fox Funeral Home in Beatrice was in charge of arrangements.
