Herbert J. Uhing, 81, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at his farm home in rural Craig.

A funeral Mass was held Feb. 18 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Tekamah. Interment was in the Tekamah Cemetery, with military graveside rites provided by American Legion Posts No. 127 and 15, and V.F.W. Post No. 3304.

Herbert J. Uhing was born June 7, 1921, on a farm near Beemer to Carl and Catherine (Wortman) Uhing.

He attended country school through the fifth grade. He attended sixth grade at the Catholic school in Creighton, while living with his grandparents. He attended seventh and eighth grade at District No. 65 in rural West Point.

After the eighth grade, he worked in the fields hauling rye straw bales. He worked in Caveler, N.D., while living in a house on wheels. For several years, he also worked for Ira Way. He would trap badgers for $60 and skunks for $250 and send them to Sears & Roebuck.

In 1942, he joined the U.S. Air Force. He served during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1944, when his father was injured.

On Nov. 28, 1945, he married Mildred Catherine Entrekin at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bancroft.

Mr. Uhing farmed and, over the years, raised cattle, hogs and chickens. In his later years, he enjoyed going to the West Point sale barn to watch the sale of calves.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Tekamah. He was a member of the Craig American Legion Post No. 127 for more than 50 years, and always poured the coffee at the Craig Legion fish fries. He was a member of the Country Card Club, where he enjoyed playing a card game of pitch, outbidding everyone else, and making his bid. He will be remembered as a person who could strike up a conversation with anyone.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Jolene and John Corbin of Lincoln; Barbara and Darwin Ruwe of Tekamah; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Kathy Uhing of Craig; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Ben Uhing and John Uhing both of Tekamah, Don and Shirley Uhing of Craig, and Gene and Helen Uhing of Papillion; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Aggie Petersen of Blair, and Helen and Merle Barr of Rock Port, Mo.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Henry and Dorothy Doncheski of Tekamah.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; brothers, Art and Carl; sisters, Dorothy Von Seggern and Olivia Hare; granddaughter, Jennifer; one great-grandchild; brothers-in-law, Howard Von Seggern, Jack Petersen, Jim Hare and Robert Entrekin; sisters-in-law, Arla Uhing, Lucille Entrekin, and Dorothy Uhing.

Hamel-Peck-Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah was in charge of arrangements.
