Marie H. Schmidt, 97, of Arlington, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Blair.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Interment will be in Fremont's Memorial Cemetery.

Marie H. Petersen was born Dec. 6, 1912, in rural Washington, Neb., to Fred and Minnie (Markman) Petersen.

She grew up in rural Washington and worked both on the farm and as a hired girl.

She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bennington, where she remained a church member until 1954, when she joined Arlington Community Church after moving to a farm in the area.

On Feb. 24, 1932, she married Otto John Schmidt in Omaha. The couple raised their family on farms in Douglas County until 1945, before moving to a farm near Arlington. The couple farmed until 1973, when they retired and moved into Arlington.

A devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Schmidt worked side-by-side with her husband, helping in the fields and with other farm chores. Renowned for her baking, she shared rolls and bread with many. She also enjoyed her garden and flowers.

She was a member of the Just for Fun Extension Club while she lived on the farm. She later joined the Multi-Purpose Senior Center in Arlington, where she enjoyed socializing, playing cards and bingo.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, LaVerne and Shirley Schmidt, and Melvin and Sally Schmidt, all of Arlington; a daughter, Eleanor Sullivan of Boca Raton, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto, in September of 1992; brothers, Henry, William, Carsen, Lawrence and Ervin; sisters, Bertha Wilke, Gladys Suhr, and Verna; and a great-grandson, Eric Lang.

Memorials are suggested to the Arlington Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, or the Arlington Senior Center.
