Elma L. Wehmeyer, 97 of Fremont and formerly of Arlington died Friday, Aug. 8, 1997 at A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.

Services were Monday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, north of Arlington. Rev. Michael L. Rogers officiated. Burial was in Memorial Cemetery at Fremont.

Wehmeyer was born May 1, 1900 in Arlington to John F. and Minnie (Echtenkamp) Hilgenkamp. She grew up in rural Arlington and she attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church School. She lived on the same farm six miles north of Arlington on Highway 91 for 52 years. On Dec. 8, 1920, she married Walter H. Wehmeyer at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She moved to Fremont March 24, 1975 and had been living at A. J. Merrick Manor since Feb. 2, 1995.

She was a life member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, Ladies Aid of the church and was its president for two years. She was a choir member for seven years and was a member of the Ladies Aid Quilters of the church. She was a congregational representative for Lutheran Family Services for 10 years and was regional chairman of the Fremont area for six years; was a charter member of Concordia Teachers College Guild – Fremont Area Chapter since 1963; a member of the American Legion Post No. 71 of Arlington for 61 years and was the Legion Auxiliary president for three years.

Survivors are a son and daughter-in-law, Dorwin and Esther Wehmeyer of Aurora, Colo.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Bernice and Raymong Grosse of Cedar Bluffs, Neb. and Geraldine and Francis Tank of Fremont; four grandsons; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter on April 19, 1990; her parents; two brothers, Harry Hilgenkamp and Harvey Hilgenkamp; two sisters, Clara Hilgenkamp and Lydia Wolf.

Pallbearers were Melvin Scheer, Richard Scheer, Marlen Wolf, Dennis Wolf, Delmar Wolf, Gary Hilgenkamp and Rollyn Hilgenkamp.

Honorary pallbearers were her grandchildren, Stephen Wehmeyer, Bruce Wehmeyer, Sarah Wehmeyer, Rebecca Wehmeyer, John Wehmeyer, Elizabeth Wehmeyer, Garlyn Grosse, Ray Carl Grosse, Michael Grosse, Gregory Grosse, Byron Tank, Michael Dillon, Jennifer Dillon and Joshua Dillon.

Memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Arlington; The Lutheran Hour or Lutheran Family Services.

Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington was in charge of arrangements.
