Lillian Weltner Services Friday

Funeral services for Miss Lillian M. Weltner will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 15, at the First Lutheran Church in Blair. Rev. Kurt Sortland and Rev. Carl Schattauer Jr. will officiate, with Clare Cowing as organist and Homer Nielsen as vocalist. Graveside services are set for 11 a.m. Saturday, March 16, at the Harlington Cemetery in Waverly, Iowa.

Lillian was born Jan. 23, 1890 in rural Greene, Iowa to Rev. Conrad and Dorothea (Lehmann) Weltner. She was baptized into the Christian faith on Feb. 2, 1890 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Greene by her father, and was later confirmed. She attended school in a one-room parish school taught by her father.

In her adult life, Lillian served in several parishes with her brother Karl, as mistress of the parsonage and occasionally as church organist. After the death of her only sister Emma in 1934, she joined for five years the household of her pastor brother-in-law George Obermeyer, caring for the three small children left by her sister’s passing.

Lillian was frequently called to service as a practical nurse to ailing family members and others, and truly lived a life dedicated to service. She spent many years working as a seamstress at the Lutheran Children’s Home in Waverly, Iowa, now known as Bremwood.

Lillian moved to Blair in June of 1971, after the death of her brother Karl, with whom she shared a home in Waverly. She lived at Parkside Apartments until August of 1983, when her failing health necessitated her move to Crowell Memorial Home. She remained there until her death on Friday, March 8, at the age of 95.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, sister Emma, and four brothers, Paul, Kurt, William and Karl. Survivors include her three nieces for whom she cared, Mrs. Trudy Hutton of Blair, Mrs. Elizabeth Hoops of Columbus, Ohio, and Mrs. Dorothy Dykman of Overland Park, Kansas, two other nieces, Mrs. Margaret Davenport of LaCrosse, Wisconsin and Mrs. Dorothy Schamanski of Winona, Minnesota, and two nephews, Robert Weltner of Summer, Iowa and William Weltner of Irvine, California.
