Obituary of Mrs. Hineline.

Sylvia E. Hineline was born in Orange county, New York, May 29, 1835, and died at DeSoto, Neb., Feb. 22, 1917, of pneumonia. The entire neighborhood of DeSoto and many friends in Washington county and elsewhere, sincerely mourn the passing away of Grandma Hineline.

Her life was indeed a beautiful one and exemplified a perfect Christian character. She was left a widow by death three times. Her first marriage occurred in Ohio to John Oberst at the age of twenty years. He died leaving her with one son, Fred H. Oberst, now of DeSoto, and five step-children of John Oberst.

She was later married to Davilla Harner, a farmer and was again left a widow with two more children. Jay and Florence Harner, both having since preceded their mother to the Great Beyond. Jay, leaving two children, Jay and Frances, and Florence a son, Frank Tony, of Lamoni, Iowa.

In 1878 Mrs. Harner was married to Solomon Hineline, Sr., now deceased, and one son, Solomon, Jr., was born to bless this union. Solomon, Jr., is now left with his wife and four children at the old home to mourn the death of their mother.

The Hineline boys, Frank, George, John, Charlie and a sister, Olive, also mourn sincerely the passing away of one who took the place of their mother, who died many years ago, who raised the children to the best of her ability always.

The children, step-children, grandchildren and all gave her every care and Mrs. Clo Carter Norris nursed her faithfully until death relieved her of her suffering.

Grandma Hineline was baptized Feb. 26, 1893, into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and faithfully followed the tenents of that faith to the end of her life.

The funeral services were in charge of Attorney Carl T. Self, of Omaha, who is also an ordained minister of the L.D.S. church. The music was furnished by a male quartet from the North Omaha, L.D.S. church. Dr. Will Toft, Carl Self, Jay Lecka and W. Hansen. They sang three beautiful old-fashioned hymns from the Saint’s Hymnal.

Mr. Self took for his text the verse “If a Man die Shall he Live Again”, and preached, an able, comforting sermon, giving reasons for the Christian faith in a future life where each and every one of us will be, according to the L.D.S. faith and belief, rewarded for every good deed done in the body.

The floral offerings were especially beautiful. The DeSoto neighborhood, daughters of Urban Cachelin, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dudgeon, all the children, and the George Hineline family all sending beautiful floral tributes.

Interment was made in the Blair cemetery in the Hineline family lot.

Pioneer Nebraska Settler Dies at DeSoto

The funeral of Mrs. Solomon Hineline, Sr., was held at the old home in DeSoto, Saturday, at 1:00 p.m. Elder Carl T. Self, of the L. D. S. Church of Omaha, preaching a comforting sermon.

Grandma Hineline will be greatly missed and is sincerely mourned not only by her children, stepchildren, and grandchildren but by the entire neighborhood where she was much beloved for her many kind deeds. The Latter Day Saints choir, of Omaha, sent up a male quartet which rendered three beautiful hymns during the services and the home was crowded to the limit with sympathizing neighbors and friends who came to mourn with the family the loss of this dear old lady. The floral offerings were profuse and helped in a measure to soften the sad aspects of death.

Sylvia Hineline was born in Orange County, New York, May 29, 1835, and died at DeSoto, Nebr., Feb. 22, 1917. She was left a widow three times by death and therefore three families of children and step-children survive to mourn a kind and loving mother. She was married to John Oberst in Ohio, who, a few years later died, leaving one son, Fred H. Oberst, now of DeSoto, and five step-sons and daughters, John, Frank, Olive, Jennie and Deal, who have since been reared to maturity and married. She was next married to Davilla Harner and was left a widow with two more children, Jay and Florence and both these and children have preceded their mother to the Great Beyond, Jay leaving a widow and two children, Jay, Jr., and Frances, and Florence leaving a husband and a son, Frank Harner and Tony, of Lamoni, Iowa. She came to Nebraska and was married to Solomon Hineline, Jr., in 1878 and one son, Solomon, Jr., was born to them and he with his wife and four children resided at the old home place with his mother at DeSoto. Mrs. Hineline also was a king and thoughtful mother to Mr. Hineline’s children by his first wife, they being George, John, Frank, Charlie and Olive all of Desoto and they were present, with the exception of Olive, who lives in Colorado, to assist in caring for their step-mother and to mourn her departure.

Thus ends, at a ripe old age the life of a faithful Christian mother who united with the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints over twenty years ago, and was faithful to the end. Interment was in the Blair Cemetery.
