Henry Wesemann Jr.

Henry Wesemann was born on June 27, 1919 to Henry and Anna (Mueller) Wesemann at his parents’ home in rural Kennard, Nebraska. He attended and graduated from Peaceful Hill Grade School and obtained his high school diploma later in life. Henry served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1941 to 1945 as an airplane mechanic, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. Henry helped out with the farming at home and eventually settled on a farm place of his own, one mile southwest of Kennard where he lived for the rest of his adult life with his wife, Ellen.

Henry married Ellen (Cramer) on August 27, 1954 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. They would have been married 43 years this summer. To this union two daughters were born.

Henry was a long-time member of Emmaus Lutheran Church in Kennard, but was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington. He was a member of the Kennard Legion Post #366, the Blair Eagles #3216, and a past member (both he and his wife) of the Spinning Wheels square dance club. Both Henry and Ellen loved square dancing and ballroom dancing (Ellen says Henry danced a great waltz).

Henry loved to tinker in his farm shop, improvising parts for just about anything. His creations worked and worked well as attested to by his fleet of no less than six running lawn mowers. Henry’s son-in-law has said that “Henry is the only guy I know that can take the John Deere tractor apart and put it back together—in the field.”

Henry’s three grandchildren delighted him with their enthusiasm and antics on regular Sunday visits.

Henry always looked forward to a good, hot card game whenever the opportunity presented itself. Sheepshead was his favorite, and Pitch came in a close second.

Henry died on June 6, 1997 in Omaha, Nebraska. His parents, brothers John, Albert, Herman and Melvin and sister Celia preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife, Ellen, daughter Sharon Appleby of Omaha; daughter and son-in-law Gail and David Mooter of Omaha; grandchildren: Paul, Christopher and Mary Ellen Mooter; brothers Bill of Silverton, Oregon, Louis of Tekamah, Nebraska; Elmer of Blair, Nebraska; sisters Ella Rohwer of Omaha, Nebraska; Rose Sass of Blair, Nebraska; Alvina Schumacher of Kennard, Nebraska; Anita Lauritsen of Blair, Nebraska; and Wanda Grebe of Bennington, Nebraska
