Herta Engelman

Services for former Dana professor, Dr. Herta Engelman, 74, who died August 20, 1985, in the Crowell Home, will be Saturday, August 24, at 10 a.m. in First Lutheran Church in Blair. The Rev. Kurt Sortland and the Reverend Carl Schattauer will officiate and burial will be in the Blair Cemetery.

Dr. Engelman was born February 25, 1911, in Duisvorg, Germany, the daughter of Fritz and Hermine Engelman. She came to the United States as an infant, traveled back to Germany with her parents between the ages of nine and 12, and graduated from high school in Chicago.

She graduated from Moody Bible Institute in 1938 studying special missionary education, preparing for five years with the Augustana Lutheran Mission in what was then Tanganyika Territory and now part of Tanzania.

Following World War II, she returned to the United States and in 1946 completed her undergraduate education at Augustana College, North Park College and in 1948 earned her bachelor's degree summa cum laude at Wheaton College.

Dr. Engelman earned both her master of arts degree and doctor of philosphy degree at Northwestern University, earning her PhD in 1956.

At Dana College, she was appointed associate professor of English in 1955 and full professor in 1957. In 1959 she was granted tenure. She retired in 1976.

She is survived by a sister, Ruth Fischer of Marble Falls, Texas.

Pallbearers will be Norman Bansen, the Rev. Kurt Sortland, the Reverend Thorvald Hansen, Richard Jorgensen, the Rev. F. W. Thomsen and Dr. Clifford Hansen.

Organist will be Clare Cowing and vocalist will be Homer Nielsen.

Campbell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
