Mrs. West Dies at 74

Mother of Prominent Herman Family Is Dead; Has 11 Children

Mrs. J. A. West, 74, mother of a large and widely-known Herman family, died at her home in Herman Tuesday morning after a lingering illness. She and Mr. West had lived in Herman almost 58 years.

Funeral services are being held at 2 p.m. today at the Herman Methodist Church. Burial will be in Herman Cemetery.

Mrs. West, as Ellender Baker, was born January 10, 1868, at Huron, Indiana, and came to Herman in 1882. She and James A. West were married at Tekamah July 3, 1884.

Mrs. West is survived by her husband; six sons, Jesse, Ben, Fern and Jennings West, all of Herman, Everett West of Oakland, California, and Glen West of Omaha; and five daughters, Mrs. Harry Leach of Herman, Mrs. Gail Drayer of Lincoln, Mrs. Perry Rose and Mrs. Kyle Jansen, both of Omaha, and Mrs. Robert Adams, Tekamah. One son, Elmon West, was killed in September, 1935, in a car-train crash in Blair.

Also surviving Mrs. West are a brother, Larney Baker of Tekamah; 31 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
