John W. West was born June 17, 1838, in Lawrence Co., Ind., and died at Herman, Dec. 30, 1916, making his age 78 years, 6 months and 13 days. In August 1862 he entered the army and was First Sergant in the 17regiment, Company F. Indiana Infantry. He served over three years in the war. He was married to Miss Sarah Higginbotham in 1860. Of seven children born to this union, four remaining are Mrs. David Cummings, Mrs. Melissa Armstrong, Mrs. Annie Foster and Walter, of Herman. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. G. A. Smith at the Baptist church Sunday.

John W. West, one of the early settlers, passed away at his home here, Saturday morning at 8:30. Although he was not in the best of health, he had not been confined to the house only a few days.

Mr. West was born June 17, 1837, in Lawrence, Co., Indiana and died December 30, 1916, at the age of 78 years, 6 months, 13 days.

He was married to Sarah Higginbutham on February 4, 1860 and to this union seven children were born, three having passed away while young. The four remaining are the three daughters, Mrs. Melissa Armstrong, Mrs. Annie Foster, Mrs. David Cummings, and one son, Walter, all of Herman.

In August 1862 he entered the Rebellion and was First Sergeant, in the 17th Regiment, Company F, Indiana Infantry and served over three years in the war.

In 1883 he with his family came to Nebraska and have resided in and near Herman ever since.

Besides his four children left to mourn him, he leaves four brothers, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; his wife having passed away July 15, 1913.

Mr. West was a man of a quiet sober nature, always kind and friendly to all with whom he mingled and honest and upright in all his dealings with his fellowmen, and will be greatly missed to those who were near and dear to him

Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church, Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock conducted by Rev. Smith and the body was laid to rest in the Herman Cemetery,
