Mrs. Jeff Van Horn Answers Final Summons

Mrs. Mary Van Horn, wife of Jefferson Van Horn, passed away at her home northwest of Blair, at 2:15 a.m., Sunday, August 19, 1923, after an illness of several years, the last few months of which she had been confined to her bed the greater part of the time.

Mary Vizina was born in Montreal, Canada, Dec. 16, 1865, and when only a small child, came with her parents to Washington county, Nebr., where her father homesteaded the land which was her home for the greater part of her life and on which she died. She was married Oct. 11, 1886, to Jefferson Van Horn of Washington county, and to them were born two sons, James V. Van Horn and Edward J. Van Horn, both of this county.

Nothing greater nor better can be said of anyone than “they did their part in life”, and this can truly be said of Mary Vizina Van Horn. She was well known as a woman who never shirked a responsibility, whether it was self-assumed or thrust upon her. Never was anyone who needed assistance at her hands, refused. No one was ever turned away from her home hungry; whenever there was sickness or suffering in her neighborhood, there she could be found ministering to their needs. Truly a good woman has gone to claim the reward promised to those who “do unto the least of these”.

She leaves to sincerely mourn the loss of a true wife, a devoted mother and faithful friend, her husband, two sons, a daughter-in-law, and two small grandchildren, several brothers and sisters, and many other relatives and many friends.

The funeral was held at Herman on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by her old time friend and neighbor, the Rev. John Poucher of Omaha and burial was made in the Blair cemetery where many of her relatives now sleep.
