Van Horn Rites Held

Herman Woman, 54, Died Saturday Night; Baptist services Held

In ill health for two years, Mrs. James Van Horn, 54, native and lifetime resident of Herman, died Saturday night. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Herman Baptist church, the Rev. John Paton of Tekamah officiating. Interment followed in Blair cemetery.

Mrs. Van Horn was born west of Herman August 23, 1887, as Claudina Wachter, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Chri? Wachter. She and Mr. Van Horn were married in Blair July 14, 1908. For many years Mrs. Van Horn had been a member of the Herman Baptist Ladies Guild and of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are the husband; a son, Dr. Vernon Van Horn of Omaha; a daughter, Mrs. Harry Swan of Omaha; two grandsons, a brother, Ben Wachter, Herman, and seven sisters. Mrs. Annie Peddie, Mrs. Hilda Yowell and Miss Christine Wachter, all of Herman, Mrs. D. N. Hansen of Bancroft, Mrs. Bertha Neider Kruger and Mrs. Emma Hansen both of Omaha, and Mrs. Clayton Deaver of Gillette, Wyoming.

Funeral services for Mrs. James Van Horn were held at two o’clock Tuesday at the Baptist Church in Herman. Rev. John Paton, pastor of the Tekamah Baptist church was in charge. Music was furnished by a quartette - Mrs. C. E. Johnson, Miss Dagmar Olson, Fred Robertson and C. R. Gray - with Mrs. G. F. Lowe at the piano. Pallbearers were S. R. Lowe, C. L. Reid, A. H. Lowe, L. D. Long, G. F. Lower and Ray Triplett. Burial was made in the Blair cemetery.

The deceased, as Claudine Wachter, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Chris Wachter, was born on a farm northwest of Herman on August 23, 1887, and died at her home in Herman May 23, 1942, aged 54 years and 9 months, had been in poor health the past two years.

She spent her entire life in Herman where she is well known. She had a cheerful disposition which endeared her to her family and friends. On July 14, 1908 she was married to James Van Horn at Blair. They lived on a farm southeast of Herman until 1927 when they moved into town.

Two children were born to them, one son, Vernon and one daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Swan, both of Omaha.

Mrs. Van Horn was a faithful member of the Baptist Guild and of the Eastern Star until her health failed.

Survivors besides the husband and children are two grandsons, Roger and Richard Swan; one brother, Ben Wachter of Herman; seven sisters, Mrs. Anna Peddie, Miss Christene Wachter and Mrs. Hilda Yowell of Herman, Mrs. Ida Hansen, Bancroft, Mrs. Bertha Neiderkruger and Mrs. Emma Hansen, Omaha and Mrs. Freda Deaver of Gillette, Wyoming; other relatives and many friends.
