Jeff Van Horn Rites Sunday

Blair Man, 78, Died Friday; Had Lived In County Half A Century

Jeff Van Horn, 78, who came to the Blair vicinity with his parents more than half a century ago, died Friday at 225 east Lincoln street following a lengthy illness. He was a former farmer.

Funeral services were held at the Campbell mortuary at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, the Rev. A. W. Clarke of the Herman Methodist church in charge. Interment was in Blair cemetery. Pallbearers were Soren Jensen, T. K. Iverson, Elmer Thone, George Nelson, Lloyd Johnson and Chris Vinderslev.

Jefferson Davis Van Horn, son of James and Mary Van Horn, was born May 10, 1863, in Jackson county, Iowa, later coming with them to a farm two miles west of Blair, where he grew to manhood.

He and Mary Vizina were married October 11, 1886, at Tekamah, and to them were born two sons, James of Herman, and Edward, who died in April, 1936. Mrs. Van Horn died August 23, 1923.

Surviving Mr. Van Horn are his son, James, of Herman; two grandchildren, Dr. Vernon Van Horn and Mrs. Harry Swan, both of Omaha; two great-grandsons, Roger and Richard Swan; and a sister, Mrs. Cassie Higby of Kansas City, Missouri.

Rites Held For Jeff Van Horn Last Sunday-Pioneer Settler Passes On Friday Witnessed Changes in the County

Jefferson Davis Van Horn, pioneer settler of Washington County, passed away, Friday, February 20, in Blair after having been in poor health for the past two years. Several weeks ago he suffered a stroke from which he never recovered and which was the contributing cause of his death.

Deceased was born in Jackson County, Iowa, on May 10, 1863, and thus at his next birth anniversary he would have been 79 years of age.

When a small child as a pioneer, he with his parents came to this county and he grew to manhood on a farm two miles west of Blair. He was married October 11, 1886 to Mary Vizina, the ceremony being performed in Tekamah.

For a long term of years he lived on a farm which he purchased northwest of Blair. His wife passed away on August 23, 1923, and a son, Edward, on April 9, 1936.

One son, James, of Herman survives as do also two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, February 22, from the Campbell Mortuary with Rev. A. W. Clark of Herman in charge.

The pallbearers who officiated were John Harry, Clyde Nelson, Soren Jensen, Chris Vinderslev, Ted Iverson, and Elmer Thone.
