Former Herman Merchant Dies

Floyd Van Valin, 62, of Coleridge, former Herman general merchant, died Tuesday in a hospital at Yankton, South Dakota. The body was returned to the Truhlsen undertaking parlors in Herman, and funeral services will be held Friday, burial following in Herman cemetery.

Mr. Van Valin, who formerly operated a general merchandise store in the location now occupied by the Potadle store, left Herman about 18 years ago.

Survivors include two sons, also two brothers, Dr. S. J. of Omaha and K. J. of California.

SERVICES HELD LAST FRIDAY FOR FLOYD VAN

Son Of Homesteaders; Was Former Herman Businessman

Floyd Van Valin, 62, the son of early Washington county homesteaders, was buried in Herman last Friday afternoon, October 11; he had passed away in a hospital at Yankton, South Dakota the preceding Tuesday, but had been an invalid for several years as the result of a paralytic stroke. Rev. A. W. Clarke conducted services at the Herman Methodist church where Mr. Van Valin had been a member since 1910.

A former Herman businessman, Mr. Van Valin was a resident of Coleridge at the time of his death. He was well known in the vicinity of Herman and Vacoma, his birthplace, and was a past master of Landmark Lodge No. 222 of Herman.

Surviving are the widow; two sons, Captain James Van Valin of Denver, Colorado and Frederick of Fort Lupton, Colorado; a daughter, Alice Marie; two brothers Dr. Shirley Van Valin of Omaha and Kelly J. Van Valin of Pasadena, California.
