LaVern Vanness, 87

Former Blair resident LaVern Vanness, 87, of Lincoln, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at the Tabitha Nursing Home in Lincoln.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at First United Methodist Church, with interment in the Blair Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home.

LaVern Vanness was born Oct. 17, 1915, in Duluth, Minn., to Jesse and Anna (Dombrouski) Spellman. She grew up and attended school in Bloomfield.

On July 16, 1936, she married Glen Vanness in Yankton, S.D. They farmed in the Modale, Iowa, are from 1947 until 1975, then moved to Blair. For the past five years, Mrs. Vanness had lived in Lincoln.

She was a member of the first United Methodist Church in Blair.

She is survived by two daughter and sons-in-law, Carol and Wesley Christensen of Lincoln, and Linda and Loren Larsen of Tyler, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Donna Vanness of Modale, Iowa; son-in-law, Richard Hand of Omaha; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three brothers, Clarence Spellman of Las Cruces, N.M., and LeRoy and Douglas Spellman, both of Mt. Vernon, Mo., and a sister, Shirley Stirewalt, also of Mt. Vernon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen; daughter, Cleo; and sister, JoAnn Jones.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home in Blair was in charge of arrangements.
