John E. “Jack” Varley, 78

Mass of Christian Burial for John E. “Jack” Varley, 78, of Blair, was Saturday, March 16, 2002, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Blair. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Varley died Wednesday, March 13, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.

John E. Varley was born Sept. 12, 1923, in Omaha to Edward and Lovina (Ranslem) Varley.

He grew up in North Bend and graduated from North Bend High School in 1941. He served in the military in 1945, and married Pauline Stewart on Sept. 28, 1945, in Omaha.

The couple moved to Blair in 1947, and Mr. Varley started a home delivery milk business. He operated the business until its sale in 1979. Mr. Varley then started working for HunTel’s engineering department; he retired from HunTel in November, 2000.

Mr. Varley was a member of St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the Blair American Legion.

He enjoyed hunting, and also feeding birds in his backyard.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline, daughter, Melinda Varley of Lincoln, two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Barbara Varley of Phoenix, Ariz., and Dennis and Kate Varley of Coopersburg, Penn., six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a brother, Gerald Varley of Omaha.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Francis Borgia Building Fund, or the Blair Rescue Squad.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
