Larry Zimmerman Killed In Car-Train Accident

Car Demolished By Train

(picture)(Caption) Pictured above is the car belonging to Larry Zimmerman of Kennard. Mr. Zimmerman was killed when the car was hit by a train Monday morning at the crossing on the road leading from Highway 30 to west Kennard.

Larry Zimmerman, 24 years of age, Kennard, was killed when the car he was driving, collided with a freight train.

The accident occurred at 12:30 o’clock this (Monday) morning at the county road– railroad track intersection just south of Kennard.

Sheriff John Sutherland, Jr., stated that the Zimmerman car was traveling south from Kennard toward Highway 30 when the accident occurred.

Mr. Sutherland stated that the front end of the Zimmerman car was demolished. It is believed he was killed instantaneously. The car was knocked back a few feet and on the east side of the county road.

It was the first highway fatality recorded in Washington County during 1965. Zimmerman was alone in the car at the time of the accident.

The Blair Rescue Squad was called to the scene of the accident and brought the body back to Blair.

Zimmerman, a Navy veteran, was born May 28, 1940 in Omaha.

He is survived by his father, Ralph Zimmerman; mother, Mrs. Arlene Zimmerman; sisters, Mrs. Mickie Brummer of Blair and Mrs. Voni McIlrath of Denver.

The Campbell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements which had not been completed at press time.

Larry Zimmerman Rites Were Today

Funeral services were held today (Thursday) for 23 year old Larry Ralph Zimmerman, of Kennard, who was killed early Monday morning in a car-train accident near Kennard.

The services were held at Kennard Emmaus Lutheran Church. The Rev. Harold Laursen officiating with interment in the Kennard Cemetery.

Mr. Zimmerman, who was born May 28, 1941, in Omaha, is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Craig, parents Ralph Zimmerman and Mrs. Arlene Zimmerman, sisters, Mrs. Mickie Brummer of Blair and Mrs. Toni McIlrath of Denver.

Pallbearers were Larry Marsh, Melvin Truhlsen, Werner Guy, Dennis Laaker, Pat Neuman and Kirby Spickler.

Campbell Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
