Hazel M. Westphalen, 81

Services for Hazel M. Westphalen, 81 of Fremont who died December 2, 1993 at Arbor Manor in Fremont were Saturday, December 4 at Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont. Rev. Leland G. Uden officiated. Burial was in Memorial Cemetery.

Hazel M. Westphalen was born July 12, 1912 in rural Ames, Nebraska. She grew up at Ames.

She lived near Scribner after her marriage. She and her husband farmed there until 1948.

She had worked at the former Mode-O-Day, Campbell’s Soup Co., Dekalb Seed Co. and Midland College, all in Fremont.

She lived at Stockton, California for five years; Fremont for four years; Washington, Nebraska for four years and in 1962 moved to Ames, where she and her husband operated Walt’s Bar until 1969. She moved to Fremont in 1980.

She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church.

She married Walter J. Westphalen February 5, 1937 at Hooper. He preceded her in death August 1, 1979.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Elsie Jorgensen Johnson; a brother, Marvin Johnson and a sister, Irene Rathbun.

She is survived by daughters Karolyn (Mrs. Rodney) Sherman of Fremont and Kathy (Mrs. Kenneth) Dolezal of North Bend; a brother, Chester Johnson of Stockton; a sister, Marjorie Kurz of Decatur, Alabama; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a special friend, Paul Dickmeyer of Fremont.

Pallbearers were he grandsons, Marty Dolezal Jr., Kirk Dolezal, Klinton Dolezal and Ted Osterloh. Honorary pallbearers were her granddaughters, Colleen Osterloh and Kelly Doezal.

Nic Engel was organist. Orville Von Seggern was solist.

Memorials may go to Creighton University’s Cancer Research Fund in Omaha.

Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont was in charge of arrangements.
