Clarice Whitaker, 87

Clarice Whitaker, 87, of Blair, died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at Crowell Memorial Home in Blair.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Ridge Cemetery in Fremont.

An Eastern Star Service will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Clarice E. Stevens was born in Red Oak, Iowa, on Dec. 5, 1910, to Samuel and Nelle (Hartbaugh) Stevens. In 1916, she moved to Blair and attended the public schools. She graduated from Blair High School in 1926.

She married Earl Meyer and the couple had a son, Jesse. Mr. Meyer and her son preceded her in death.

In 1941, she married Earl Whitaker. He died in 1959.

Clarice worked as staff accountant for the government at Fort Omaha for 35 years, retiring in 1973. She was well known for her brunches at the Officers Club at Offutt Air Force Base, and her decorations for banquets and lecturers for many organizations.

She lived in Omaha until 1991 when she moved to Texas. She returned to Blair in the fall of 1994.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Trinity Chapter, of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, Daughters of Colonial Wars, Son and Daughter of the Pilgrims. She was a member and had also served as the national treasurer and president for Daughters of 1812.

She gave many talks in Omaha schools on the flag and patriotism.

She also wrote a book on her family genealogy.

For many years, she took care of her brother, Bill Stevens, who had been a prisoner of war.

She is survived by one grandson, Randy Whitaker of Garland, Texas; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Alice Bassett of Oak Harbor, Wash.; and one brother, Art Stevens, of Buffalo, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and son, Jesse; three sisters, Helen Arnold, Lillian Kjelgaard and Elsie Chard; and one brother, Bill Stevens.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
