Services for Arthur Wiese, 87 of Blair and Kennard who died January 2, 1995 at Crowell Memorial Home will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 5 at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home. Burial will be in the German Cemetery.

Arthur Wiese was born December 30, 1907 on the family farm near Kennard to Rudolph and Tena Harder Wiese. He attended Sunnyside and Peaceful Hill Country Schools.

On February 24, 1942, he was inducted into the United States Army at Leavenworth, Kansas. Before seeing action during World War II with the 636th Tank Destroyer Division, he was stationed at Camp Bovie, Texas; Camp Blonding, Florida; North Carolina and then at Camp Edwards on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. On April 1, 1943, he and the 636th Tank Destroyer Division left the United States on the “Hawaiian Skipper.” They arrived at Aran Algiers, Africa on April 13, 1943. The 636th, which saw 157 consecutive days of the firing line without any relief was the first division to land on the European Continent.

He was one of those wounded in the massive air raid in Salerno, Italy, September 8, 1943 and took part in the capture of Rome and Leghorn and Anzio Beachhead. The division also saw action in the invasion of southern France, going up the Rhineland Valley through Germany to Salzburg, Austria where Wiese was when the war ended.

He was discharged October 24, 1945. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Arrowhead and five Battle Stars.

He was a member of the Kennard American Legion, Blair Veterans of Foreign Wars and Blair Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Asmus, Henry, August and Herman and by one sister, Christina.

He is survived by his sister, Dorothy and a brother, Clarence, both of Blair; two nieces and four nephews.

Memorials may be directed to the Kennard American Legion, Kennard Rescue Squad or Crowell Memorial Home.
