Keith ‘Kayo’ Vinton Dead at 82

Keith “Kayo” Vinton, a long-time Blair businessman and community supporter, died on Sunday in North Carolina.

Kayo had been living at a care facility near his son Jeff’s home on the coast.

In his 82 years, Kayo carried on the family car dealership started by his father, flew a C-47 filled with paratroopers to jump zones in France on D-Day and later became active in many community and church groups.

Jeff Vinton said his father was born in Glenwood, Iowa. Kayo’s father and one of his father’s cousins came to Blair and started a General Motors dealership. Kayo, one of his brothers and later his sons, operated the dealership until 1991.

Though Kayo retired in 1985, his family said he still loved the car business and would often run after parts or shag cars for the dealership.

His family said Kayo often remarked “The worst decision Oldsmobile ever made was to stop making the 98”.

Kayo had two Oldsmobile 98s, both of which he kept in an immaculate state.

Jeff said his father’s long list of activities in the Blair community included being a charter member of the Blair Lions Club, a past president of the school board, a member of the chamber of commerce and singing in the Methodist Church’s choir.

After he retired, Kayo and his wife, Mary, spent part of the summer in Minnesota. Jeff said his parents wintered in Arizona.

Kayo moved to North Carolina to be near Jeff last winter after Mary passed away. Services are scheduled for this Saturday at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Blair. For a complete obituary, please see page 2A.
