Evelyn M. Volk, 66, of Blair died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair following a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 15, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Blair. Interment was in Blair’s Holy Cross Cemetery.

Evelyn Marie Volk was born Dec. 9, 1938, in Lake City, S.D., to Earl C. and Margaret (Hollander) Couser. She attended McKinley Township Rural School in Marshall County, S.D., through the 8th grade. She attended high school at Presentation school in Aberdeen, S.D., and graduated from Aberdeen Central in 1956.

On Sept. 15, 1958, she married Peter P. Volk. The couple lived in Hague and Strasburg, N.D., and in 1966, they moved to Wecota, S.D., where Mrs. Volk began working for the Fuller Brush Co. She later worked for the Red Owl Grocery store in Faulkton, S.D. Before her retirement in 2004, she managed the food and deli service at the Cenex Co-op in Faulkton for several years. Mr. and Mrs. Volk moved to Blair in 2005.

Mrs. Volk attended St. Thomas Catholic Church in Faulkton. Her greatest interests included her faith, family, specialized sewing, and family ancestry. Her interest in family history began in grade school and in 1988; she worked toward compiling an extensive history of both her and her husband’s families. She published a two-volume history of the Volk family in 1995, and completed extensive family registries of the Couser and Schaffner families.

She is survived by her husband, Peter; children and spouses, Dennis Earl and Starla Volk of Rapid City, S.D., Margaret Sue and Allen Stoltz of Blair; sisters and brothers-in-law, Beverly and Lester Finkbeiner of Ipswich, S.D., and Virginia and Norman Matheson of DeFuniak Springs, Fla.; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Sally Couser of St. Paul, Minn.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
