Frank J. Volnek, 84

Former Arlington resident Frank J. Volnek, 84, of Fremont, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at the Fremont Area Medical Center.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Fremont. Interment with military honors will be at Calvary Cemetery, Fremont. Visitation began on Thursday, but will also be held at the church, one hour prior to services.

Frank J. Volnek was born March 27, 1919, in Greeley County to Andrew and Clara (Niedbalski) Volnek. He grew up on a farm near Cedar Rapids.

He married Elizabeth B. Tworek on Nov. 22, 1943, at Genoa. After his marriage, the couple lived in Waterloo until Mr. Volnek entered the U.S. Army during World War II. He served from April 25, 1945 to July 8, 1946, serving in Germany and earning the rank of Sergeant.

He returned to the states and lived and farmed in the Elk City and Elkhorn areas, where he operated a corn sheller for the Gottsch Brothers at Elkhorn. He moved to the Fremont area in 1960 and farmed until the late 1970s. He operated the Elkhorn Township road grader until 1984. He moved to Arlington in 1984, where he worked at Marshall Nursery until 1995. He moved to Fremont in April 2003.

Mr. Volnek was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont; V.F.W. Post No. 8332 and American Legion Post No. 71, both of Arlington; and the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Emil Volnek of Kearney and Eugene and Debora Volnek of Valley; brother and sister-in-law, Andy and Phyllis Volnek of Columbus; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Patricia and Robert Parry of Columbus and Virginia and Frank Konwinski of Silver Creek; three grandchildren and their families; and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers, Pete and Mike; six sisters, Cecelia and Rita Ann Volnek, Della and Margaret Bosak, Frances Czuba and Esther Lennan.

Memorials are suggested to the Arlington Rescue Squad.

Moser Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
