Harlan Von Seggern, 78, of Newton, Iowa, died of a heart attack on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at his home in Newton.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton, with Chaplin Merle Smith officiating. There will be no visitation; however, family will greet friends immediately following the memorial service.

Harlan C. Von Seggern was born Aug. 23, 1924, in Scribner to Johann H. and Bertha (Von Essen) Von Seggern. He was a graduate of Scribner High School and Wayne State Teacher’s College in Nebraska. On May 22, 1949, he married Jean P. Peters in Hooper.

He was a safety engineer, and worked for National Gypsum in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the Maytag Company, and AGC. He had lived in Newton for 42 years.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Jasper County Historical Society and Museum, Pheasants Forever, Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, and the National Association of Safety Engineers.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Betty Von Seggern of St. Louis, Mo.; a daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne Von Seggern and Tim Wilcox of Newton; two grandchildren; two brothers, Les Von Seggern and Marvin Von Seggern; four sisters, Wilma Miller, Deloris Popkin, Eileen Drieling, and Beverly Holmes; and a daughter-in-law, Pam Clippenger.

He was preceded in death by his wife and two sisters.

Memorials are suggested to the First Lutheran Church or the Jasper County Historical Society.

Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is in charge of arrangements.
