Thornton Michael 'Mick' Gatewood, 68

Thornton Michael "Mick" Gatewood, 68, of Lyons, died Friday, January 4, 2013, after a long illness at Logan Valley Manor in Lyons.

A Memorial Service is planned in June. There is no visitation.

Thornton Michael “Mick” Gatewood was born October 22, 1944, in Lyons to John E. “Jack” and Rachel (Anderson) Gatewood.

He attended the Lyons Public Schools.

On February 9, 1963, he married Sandra Jolly. They had two daughters, Chantelle Rae, in 1963 and Tina Marie, in 1967.

On January 17, 1971, he married Joani Hotchkiss. They welcomed a daughter, Shannon Michelle, in 1971, and a son, Sean Eddie, in 1973.

In 1981, he married Teresa Marshall and they had a daughter, Crystal Lynne, in 1982.

Mick spent most of his life working as a millwright, building ethanol plants all over the Midwest, including Cargill in Blair.

He retired in 2008 from Wanzek Construction. He had been living at Logan Valley Manor in Lyons.

He enjoyed various hobbies throughout his life, including traveling by motorcycle, riding horses, visiting museums and amateur photography.

He came to know Jesus Christ as his Saviour in the spring of 1993. He enjoyed attending the United Methodist Churches in Oakland and Lyons.

He lived by the motto “Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man” as a devoted member of Alcoholics Anonymous for the past 17 years and counseled many people, helping them achieve and maintain sobriety.

Mr. Gatewood loved his children and grandchildren, who live all over the United States, and spoke respectfully of their mothers. He adored spending time with his nephew and niece, Scott and Lisa Gatewood and their family, Faith, Bob, Grady and Rachel of Oakland.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Chantelle and Arthur Moller of Omaha, Tina and Orland Hilliard of Corinth, Texas, Shannon Suter of Madison, Ind., and Crystal and John Cardoni of Nashville, Tenn.; son, Sean of Jeffersonville, Ind.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Myrna Johnston of Sacramento, Calif., Sue and Jerry Denton of Norfolk, Shirley and Bob Nebel of Omaha and Janell and Randy Carson of Herman; seven grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; 14 nieces and nephews; 20 grandnieces and grand-nephews; and his three former wives.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Pelan Funeral Home in Lyons is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gatewood died on January 4, 2013, at Logan Valley Manor in Lyons after a long illness.

He was born October 22, 1944, in Lyons to John E. "Jack" and Rachel (Anderson) Gatewood.
