Henry J. “Hein” Wilkening, 89

Henry J. “Hein” Wilkening, 89, of rural Arlington died Monday, March 26, 2001, at Bergan Mercy Medical Center in Omaha.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 29, at Salem Lutheran Church of Fontanelle. The Rev. Charles Bichel will officiate. Interment will be in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery.

Henry J. Wilkening was born Jan. 18, 1912, on the family farm north of Arlington to Henry P. and Amelia (Strenger) Wilkening. He received his education through the school in Fontanelle.

He served in the United States Army during WW II from 1942 through 1946. He served in the medical corps for two of those years, then in the infantry in Europe, and then in the corps of engineers.

He farmed on the family farm north of Arlington all his working years. He married Agnes Moeller on March 19, 1943; she preceded him in death in March 1970. On Sept. 6, 1980, he was married to Dorothy Christ Wilkening in the Salem Lutheran Church at Fontanelle. They lived on Dorothy’s farm, located seven miles north of Arlington.

Mr. Wilkening was a member of Salem Lutheran Church of Fontanelle, where he had served in various church offices, and he was a member of its Lutheran Brotherhood. He was also a member of American Legion Post 71, and VFW Post 8332, both of Arlington.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, son and daughter-in-law, H. John and LuAnna Wilkening of Omaha, three step-daughters and their spouses, Eloise and Merlin Greunke of Arlington, Donna and Robert Toebben of Blair, and Kay Wittman of Omaha, nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his first wife, Agnes, Mr. Wilkening was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred and Raymond, and by his sister, Norma Bartling.

Ludwigsen Mortuary in Fremont is in charge of arrangements.
