FOUNDER OF THE CROWELL FIRM DEATH VICTIM

Native Of Blair Where Crowell Lbr. & Gr. Co. Was Organized

C. C. Crowell, Jr., head of the Crowell Elevator Company of Omaha for the past thirty years, died in an Omaha hospital on May 4th. Deceased was a native of Blair, living as a boy in the beautiful home now known as Crowell Memorial Home.

The father came here in the seventies, and with others went into the grain, lumber and coal business, and amassed a fortune. As the business grew, its expansion caused the company to move its offices to Omaha and the home was given to the Methodist church as a home for old folks.

C. C. Jr. grew to manhood here, and after his marriage he built a home on West Washington St., and resided there until the change of business locations when he moved to Omaha where he resided until his death.

He is survived by his wife, Ida M.; son, Herman, F.; daughters, Pauline and Mrs. R. E. Chandler, all of Omaha. Other survivors: Son, Christopher C., 3d, Portland, Ore.; brothers Nathan F., Steward, Neb; Harland of Olympia, Wash.; sister, Mrs. L. M. Weaver, Spokane, Wash.

Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon.

DEATH TAKES CHRISTOPHER CROWELL, JR.

SON OF LATE BLAIR LUMBER AND GRAIN MAGNATE SUCCUMBS AT AGE 68

Christopher C. Crowell, jr., 68, of 5002 Capitol Avenue, Omaha, son of the late C.C. Crowell, wealthy Blair lumber and grain man and capitalist, died Tuesday in an Omaha hospital. He had been president of the Crowell Elevator company the past 30 years.

Son of Christopher and Polly Crowell, he was born in Blair, July 8, 1874, was well educated and trained practically from childhood to assume the responsibilities of managing his father’s flourishing business, which at its height included about 25 stations throughout eastern Nebraska.

Surviving Mr. Crowell are his wife; two sons, Herman F. Crowell of Omaha and Christopher C. Crowell III of Portland, Oregon; two daughters, Pauline and Mrs. R.E. Chandler, both of Omaha; two brothers, Nathan F. Crowell of Stewart, Nebraska, and Harland Crowell of Olympia, Washington; and a sister, Mrs. L.M. Weaver, Spokane, Washington. There is one grandchild.

FUNERAL IS TODAY

Funeral services are being held at 2 p.m. today at the Burket chapel in Omaha, interment following in Forest Lawn cemetery.

The Crowells for years constituted one of Blair’s most prominent families. C.C. Crowell, sr., came here from East Dennis, Massachusetts, as the son of a wealthy banker, merchantman and industrialist. He came to Blair when it was founded and soon had amassed a fortune here, building what is now the Crowell Memorial home for the Aged as his private mansion. He died in California in 1910.
