Ethel M. Saathoff, 62, of Omaha, died Monday, May 18, 2009, at the Hospice House in Omaha.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday, May 22, at Lutheran Church of the Master, 2617 S. 114th Street, in Omaha. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Ethel Maude Sidebottom was born March 21, 1947, in Omaha, to Durward Lee “D.L.” and Edith Irene Sidebottom. She grew up on a farm outside of Blair and graduated from Blair High School in 1965.

She then attended and graduated from Capital Beauty School in 1966, after which she managed Earl’s Style Salon in Omaha for five years. She also worked at Hairloom, Mapleview Salon, and Suite 19 as a beautician, retiring from Suite 19 in 2008.

On June 6, 1970, she married Paul G. Saathoff in Blair. The couple had one son, Matthew P. Saathoff.

Mrs. Saathoff was a member of Altrusa, a women’s service organization, for many years until failing health intervened. She loved the Henry Doorly Zoo and sold zoo memberships for 38 years. She volunteered her time as a math tutor at Columbian Elementary School while her son attended school there. She also volunteered her time at Burke High School by co-chairing (1995) and chairing (1996) the after-prom party committee.

She loved spending time with her family, and loved taking care of her home, where she enjoyed entertaining family and friends. She was passionate about gardening and antiquing. Family heirlooms meant so much to her and she displayed them throughout her home.

She is survived by her husband, Paul; son and daughter-in-law, Matthew P. and Cathy R. Saathoff; grandson, Jamison D. Saathoff; an expected first granddaughter; brother and sister-in-law, Durward Lee “Bud” and Margie Sidebottom; sisters and brother-in-law, Edith Satterfield, Mary Ann and Denny Laaker; mother-in-law, Jean Saathoff; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Charles Samuel Sidebottom; and sister, Donna Mae Sidebottom.

Memorials are suggested to Dana College or the Lutheran Church of the Master.
