BETTY MAE SABALKA, 56

Funeral services were Friday, July 13, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fairfax, South Dakota for Betty Mae Sabalka who died July 11, 1990 at the Lake Andes Health Care Center after a lengthy battle with cancer. Rev. Clark Gies officiated. Burial was in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.

Betty Mae Sabalka was born June 3, 1934 at Blair to Carl and Bernice Gilliland Petersen. She received her education in the Blair area schools.

She married Dean R. Sabalka January 12, 1951 at Logan, Iowa. They made their home in Fremont for 15 years and on September 1, 1969 they moved to Bonesteel where they purchased and operated the “Bonesteel Enterprise” newspaper. On January 1, 1976, they purchased the “Lake Andes Wave” newspaper at Lake Andes, South Dakota.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church at Fairfax.

She was preceded in death by her father, Carl and an infant brother.

She is survived by her husband, Dean; four daughters, Rita (Mrs. Ivan) Umberger of Fairfax; Carol (Mrs. David) Perlenfein of Bonesteel; Shirley Lindgren of Salem, South Dakota; and Pam (Mrs. Kevin) Wells of Lake Andes; one son, Dean Sabalka, Jr. of Ft. Drum, New York; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her mother, Bernice Petersen of Bonesteel and other relatives and friends.

Viola Wittmuss was organist. Lillie Perlenfien was register.

Casket bearers were Jim Perlenfein, William Hausmann, Ivan Umberger, Sr., Kent Wells, Vernon Wells and Brian Umberger. All her friends were honorary casketbearers.

Clausen Chapel in Burke, South Dakota was in charge of arrangements.
