Delwin E. Johnson, 92

Delwin E. "Del" Johnson, 92, of Sun City, Ariz., died peacefully on Sept. 19, 2012, after several months of hospice care.

Memorial services will begin with a mass at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at St. Clements of Rome Catholic Church, 15800 Del Webb Blvd., Sun City, followed by a Celebration of Life at Regency Mortuary, 9850 W. Thunderbird Rd., Sun City. Interment will be in National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix with a 2 p.m. military honors ceremony.

Delwin Emanuel Johnson was born Sept. 4, 1920, in Oakland to Walfred and Irene Johnson. He graduated from Oakland High School in 1938.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June 1942, began active duty in October 1942, proceeded to Navy Flight School, and eventually became a Navy dive bomber pilot.

Before leaving for duty in California on Jan. 7, 1943, he married Margaret L. Boelter on Dec. 22, 1942.

He was honorably discharged on Dec. 17, 1945. During some of his training and service time, the couple had lived in Santa Rosa, Calif. He attended St. Mary’s College at Berkeley, Calif., under the Navy’s V-5 program.

After his discharge, they returned to Nebraska and opened a general store in Yutan. After several years of increasing competition and a store fire, he eventually moved the family to Fremont and he began working for Fremont National Bank in 1952. He retired from the bank as a vice president in 1982.

While in Fremont, he was active in numerous community events, the Chamber of Commerce, Optimists International, was a Boy Scout leader, member of the Elks, VFW, American Legion and Knights of Columbus at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Upon his retirement in 1983, the couple moved to Glendale, Ariz. Mrs. Johnson died on Dec. 17, 1989. He moved to Sun City in 1991.

Mr. Johnson was a part-time realtor and also worked part time in the pro shop at several Sun City golf courses.

He attended St. Clements of Rome Catholic Church.

In May 2012, he had the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C., and the World War II Memorial with Honor Flight.

He loved his family, whether visiting his brothers and sister in Nebraska on his annual fall trips or being near his grandkids and great-grandkids. He always had a good sense of humor along with a kind heart and welcoming spirit.

He was an avid golfer and Nebraska football fan. In addition to playing and watching sports, he loved playing cards and board games.

He is survived by sons and daughter-in-law, Don and Dianne of San Diego, Calif., and Randy of Geneva, Minn.; brothers and sister-in-law, Emory and Mary of Fremont and Dean of Norfolk; sister, Lois McKee of Blair; daughter-in-law, Kathy of Glendale; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; brother, Ellery; son, Leland; and granddaughter, Angela Lynn Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Hospice of the Valley, Phoenix, Ariz., or the Disabled American Veterans.
