Noted Jurist Dies

Former Judge of Washington County Docket Expires

This community was greatly shocked last week at the news of the sudden death of District Judge Arthur C. Wakely who died in Omaha last Friday morning. Judge Wakely was instantly killed when he fell 47 feet from the stairs between the fourth and fifth stairs of the Douglas county court house to the stairs above the second floor.

Judge Wakely, who was 73 years old at the time of his death, had served as judge of this district for many years and was well acquainted in this community having taken care of the Washington county docket for several years. He was a noted jurist and was highly though of for his broadmindedness and fairness in his decisions.

The death of Judge Wakely leaves the second vacancy on the bar of this district within the past year, the other vacancy having been caused by the death of the late Judge Carrigan. According to a dispatch this week, Governor McMullen will probably choose someone from the list of 22 Omaha candidates running for the bench in the fourth judicial district who are not now serving as judges. Included in this list are the following Omaha men; F. M. Dineen, H. S. Daniels, William McDonnell, John W. Yeager, W. W. Slabaugh, J. H. Grossman, A. C. Thomsen, W. J. Ballard, H. A. Meyers, G. P. North, M. O. Cunningham, A. E. Baldwin, Chester A. Foster, Geo. A. Lee, D. W. McNeill, Sophus F. Neble, John O. Yeiser, R. L. Beveridge, J. C. Travis, E. C. Page, D. E. O’Brien and C. C. Sheppard.
