LOUIS B. SCARPINO, 75

Louis B. Scarpino, 75, died at home in Oak Harbor, Wash., March 18, 2006, after an extended illness. Funeral services were March 25 at Burley Funeral Chapel in Oak Harbor with interment at the Maple Leaf Cemetery.

Louis Bernard Scarpino was born May 25, 1930, in Omaha to Joseph and Angeline Scarpino.

He grew up in the Omaha area, later moving to Blair.

He was a devoted Nebraska Cornhusker football fan. It didn’t matter what else was going on or how he felt, if there was a game on, he was watching or listening to it.

He also had a great passion for Italian music by Mario Lanza, Frankie Lane and the Three Tenors. He enjoyed old movies, especially the classic westerns.

From the age of 19 he loved driving trucks. He spent over 40 years of his life working as a truck driver.

He served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was able to carry on his truck-driving passion as an ambulance driver for the Army. He was proud of his military service and his country.

Mr. Scarpino married his wife, Nancy, in Omaha on March 30, 1962. In December 2004, with his declining health, they chose to move to Oak Harbor, Wash., where their youngest daughter lived, so they might be close to family during his final months.

He was a kind and giving man. He and his wife had five children, all of which they adopted. Community meant a lot to Mr. Scarpino. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He is survived by his wife Nancy; daughters and sons-in-law, Renee and Jesus Lopez, also of Oak Harbor; Stephanie and Roy Jumps of St. Louis, Mo.; two sons, Ramon of Des Moines, Iowa and Christopher of Omaha; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and brothers, Joseph and Robert Scarpino, both of Omaha.

He was preceded in death by one son, Larry.
