John Kelso Winchell

John Kelso Winchell was born June 18, 1843 at Newport, Indiana. There he lived until, at the age of 18 he enlisted in Company B, 132nd. Illinois Infantry at Chicago. At the close of the Civil War he came to Ringgold County, Iowa. At this place he was married to Miss Sophronia Nobles, April 1, 1876. To this union two sons were born, one of them dying in infancy.

They lived in Iowa until 1881, when they moved to Washington County, Nebraska. Mr. Winchell worked at the carpenter trade until 1889, when they moved on a farm, where they lived for fourteen years. In 1903 they moved to Blair, which has continued to be their home.

Mr. Winchell was a member of the United Brethren Church from young manhood, and belonged to the G. A. R.

He departed this life November 3, 1928, at the age of 85 years, 4 months, 16 days. He is survived by his wife, one son, Merton S. Winchell, who lives on a farm south of Blair; one granddaughter and one sister, Mrs. Orlena Davis of Wellington, Kansas, who with many friends cherish his memory.

Mr. Winchell was an ideal citizen, quiet and unassuming and a man of deep convictions living as nearly as possible up to the golden rule and was a character well worthy of emulation.

War Veteran Dies

Funeral Services for John K. Winchell Held Monday Afternoon

John K. Winchell was born June 18, 1843 at Newport, Indiana, and died at his home on east Grant street last Saturday evening following a short illness. The deceased lived in Indiana until 1861 when he enlisted in Company B, 132nd Illinois Infantry at Chicago where he served until the close of the war. Later he moved to Ringgold county, Iowa, and in 1876 he was united in marriage with Miss Sophronia Nobles. To this union two children were born, one of whom died in infancy.

In 1881 the family moved to Washington County, Nebr., where the husband worked at the carpenter trade for about eight years after which they moved to a farm south of the city. In 1903 the family moved to Blair where they have since resided. Mr. Winchell was a prominent member of the G.A.R. and held a wide acquaintance in this county where he was highly thought of.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist church on Monday afternoon at 2:00 ofclock, the Rev. Carl G. Bader, officiating after which interment was made in Blair cemetery. A quartette composed of: D. C. Van Deusen, Rev. Bader, Miss Elsie Hughes and Mrs. Wm. Wright furnished music at the services.

He leaves to mourn his loss his bereaved wife; a son, Merton, of this city; a granddaughter; and a sister, Mrs. Orlena Davis, of Wellington, Kansas.
