PIONEER OF FONTANELLE DIES

Fontanelle mourns the loss of another thrifty early German settler in the passing away of Christopher Schafersman, who died at the General hospital in Fremont on Saturday, April 12th, at the age of about 70 years. He suffered for several months past with a complication of internal ailments. Several weeks prior to his end an abscess formed on the right side of his throat, which seriously affected his vocal organs and probably hastened his end.

He was married to Miss Hannah Ruwe in his old home in Germany about 1870, after which the couple immediately emigrated to this country and settled down to housekeeping on the west side of Washington county, where by hard labor and economical habits they acquired a good deal of wealth. Six children, three sons and three daughters, were born to this union, who are August and Henry Schafersman of Hooper, Mrs. William Kunlman of Warsaw, Mrs. Albert Fuhlrodt of Wisner, Mr. ___man Richter of Herman, and Theodore Schafersman, who resides with his parents on the home farm north of Fontanelle.

He was a man of unassuming, gentle disposition and respected by all who came in contact with him, a faithful member of the Lutheran church and a member of the board of its managers. The funeral services were held on Tuesday, at 12 a.m., at the residence and 1 o’clock at the Lutheran Church, with Rev. L.Grauenhorst officiating.

Blair burial record information has his burial in the Fontanelle Salem Lutheran Cemetery.
