NICKERSON GIRL KILLED IN CRASH

Funeral services were Saturday, February 19, at First United Methodist Church in Fremont for Carol E. Schaulis, 14, of Nickerson, who was killed in a six-vehicle accident two miles north of Winslow on U.S. 77.

Schaulis was a passenger in a car drive by Stacie Petersen, according to the Nebraska State Patrol. Icy roads and thick fog were thought to have contributed to the accident in which three others were injured.

Petersen, 16; her 12-year-old brother, Chad, both of Nickerson; and Sandra J. Anderson, 37, a grade-school teacher from Oakland were injured.

Petersen was reportedly northbound on the highway when her vehicle collided with Anderson’s southbound vehicle shortly after 8 a.m. The Anderson vehicle hit Petersen’s vehicle broadside in the southbound lane. Anderson’s vehicle was struck moments later by a southbound vehicle driven by Holly D. Heitshusen, 20, of Hooper. Her car was then struck by another southbound vehicle driven by Ronald M. Powell, 25, of Lincoln.

The impact knocked Heitshusen’s vehicle into a parked vehicle owned by Ruth Parrish, 51, of Scribner, who had pulled off the road when she saw the accident.

Powell’s vehicle was then hit by a southbound pick-up truck drive by Jay A. ___hing, 19, of Craig.

Carol E. Schaulis was born June 2, 1968, in Fremont. She was raised in Fremont and attended Fremont elementary schools until 1976 when she started school at Rosedale. She was a freshman at Logan View Junior-Senior High School.

She is survived by her parents, Guy Schaulis of Fremont and Mrs. Veda Stone of Nickerson; one sister, Connie Schaulis, who is attending Chadron State College; two brothers, Ronald Schaulis of Fremont and David Schaulis of Houston. Her grandparents, Mrs. Anna Schaulis of Hooper and Harold Lillie of Fremont, also survive her.

Lattin-Dugan-Chambers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
