Leona A. Grossnicklaus, 92

Leona A. Grossnicklaus, 92, of Shelby died Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Warren Memorial Hospital in Friend with family by her side.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, March 8, at Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation will be 6-7 p.m. Thursday, March 7 at the church with a rosary at 7 p.m. Interment will be in the Shelby Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Leona Alta Fillinger was born April 3, 1920, to Edward and Margaret "Maggie" (Gondringer) Fillinger south of Shelby.

She attended school in Shelby and graduated from Shelby High School in 1937. Following high school, she worked as a "Rosie the riveter" in San Diego, Calif. She returned to Nebraska and taught country school south of Clarks.

On September 10, 1946, she married Raymond Grossnicklaus. To this union, eight children were born.

In 2005, Mrs. Grossnicklaus moved to St. Joseph Court in David City. In 2009, she moved to the Friend Manor where she lived until her death.

She was a member of Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Ann's Guild and the Shelby Legion Auxiliary.

She loved to sew, bake wedding and birthday cakes, make crafts, shop and spend time with her grandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Lee (Charlene) Grossnicklaus of Shelby, Tim (Jan) Grossnicklaus of Shelby, Gene (Snookie) Grossnicklaus of Marysville, La., Van Grossnicklaus and special friend Diane Hudson of Theodosia, Mo., Susan (Harlan) Schrock of Friend, Ann (Mike) Landerfield of Eagle, Allan (Kimberly) Grossnicklaus of Elgin and Jane (Bill) Straube of Blair; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; grandson, Wyatt Grossnicklaus; sisters and brothers-in-law, Geneva and Tony McCormick, Margaret and Bud Carpenter, Florence and Ernie Waller and Lorene and George Jones; and brothers, Edward Fillinger and Harry Fillinger.

Dubas Funeral Home of Osceola and Stromsburg is in charge of arrangements.
