Melvin L. Scheer, 74, of Arlington, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Fremont Area Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 13, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Arlington, with the Rev. Dennis Maaske officiating. Interment was at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery.

Melvin L. Scheer was born Sept. 9, 1926 in rural Nickerson to Leonard and Emma (Wehmeyer) Scheer. He was a lifelong resident of the Nickerson and Arlington areas, where he farmed. Mr. Scheer moved into Arlington in 1993.

On June 26, 1993, he married Lola M. Gerwick Giesselmann at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Arlington.

Mr. Scheer was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran church and held several offices in the church. He was also a member of the Lutheran Laymen’s League and the Arlington Lion’s Club. Mr. Scheer served on the Board of Directors of the Nickerson Coop; and played softball for Scheer Oil Company.

He is survived by his wife, Lola; five stepsons and their spouses, Dean and Deanna Giesselmann of Omaha; Kent and Patty Ann Giesselmann of Scribner; Kevin and Mary Jo Giesselmann of Elkhorn; Paul and Dr. Paige Giesselmann of Fremont; and David and Vicki Giesselmann of Ankeny, Iowa; a step-daughter and her spouse, Marlene and Rick Pyatt of Lincoln; a sister-in-law, Lila Scheer of Arlington; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Richard and an infant.

Memorials are suggested to Camp Lutheran at Schuyler; Arlington Community Foundation; and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Chapel in Arlington was in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 9 pm Friday, Jan. 12, at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Chapel in Arlington. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.
