Maxine L. Nielsen, 86, of Kennard, died Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Kennard. Visitation will be Monday, April 1, at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home in Blair, beginning at 2 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. Interment will be in the Kennard Cemetery.

Maxine Lillian Voss was born February 28, 1927, in Blair to Otto and Margaret (Wiese) Voss.

She attended Peaceful Hill School for eight years and then attended Bennington High School.

She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington.

She worked as a nanny in Omaha, then went to work as a clerk/cashier for Virginia Dare and Herzberg's Department Stores until the fall of 1945. She then came home to help her father pick corn.

On February 20, 1946, she married Louis Nielsen in Omaha. To this union, two children were born.

They lived in the Blair area until 1950 and then settled in Kennard. She worked as a babysitter and at the Midway Café.

In 1969, she was offered a job as a substitute clerk in the Kennard Post Office. Mrs. Nielsen later took her civil service test, passed and began her new career with the U.S. Postal Service. She worked at the Kennard, Blair and Fort Calhoun Post Offices and was also a substitute rural route carrier for five and a half years. She then worked at the Boys Town Post Office as a part-time clerk.

In 1984, she was appointed postmaster of the Kennard Post Office. She retired from the postal service on November 30, 1990, after 26 years of dedicated service.

Mrs. Nielsen was a member of Emmaus Lutheran Church in Kennard. She was an active officer of the Kennard Community Club during its existence.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, camping, quilting, doing volunteer work and traveling with her husband.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Darrel Timperley of Norfolk; daughter-in-law, Roxanne Nielsen of Kennard; grandchildren, Amy Allen and Jim Beck of Norfolk, Abby Allen of Kennard, Ann Allen and Chris Schumacher of Kennard, Niki and Ernie Shear of Scranton, N.D., Denise and Bryan Spilinek of Fremont, Brian and Aubrey Nielsen of Kennard, Kylee Nielsen of Kennard and Bryce Nielsen of Kennard; five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law and her spouse, Jennilou and Sheldon Warrick of Blair; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; son, Dennis “Buckshot” Nielsen; brother, Clarence Voss; sisters, Bernice Enger, Viola Schneekloth, Irene Schmidt, Ann Knutzen and Leona Voss.

Memorials may be directed to Emmaus Lutheran Church or the Kennard Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad.
