RETIRED POST OFFICE EMPLOYEE, 74, WAS LONG ILL IN HOSPITALS

William O. Scherdin, 74, retired Blair post office custodian and a resident of Blair since young manhood, died at Methodist Hospital in Omaha early Monday.

Seriously ill since Christmas, Mr. Scherdin had been hospitalized eight weeks prior to his death. He had been confined to both University and Methodist Hospitals and had undergone major operations and blood transfusions.

Rites were held at Trinity Lutheran Church yesterday at 2:30 p.m., the Rev. H.C. Jul. Frese officiating. Pallbearers were Ray Hewett, Carl F. Kolterman, Garfield P. Norby, Alfred O. Sick, Frank Lutz and Ernest Lang. Interment, under direction of the Bendorf Funeral Home, was in Blair Cemetery.

Son of Mr. and Mrs. August Scherdin, Mr. Scherdin was born Mar. 25, 1874, at Iowa City, Ia. As a small child he moved to Atlantic, Ia., with his parents. He came to Blair as a young man and during all the ensuing years had lived here or near Herman and Kennard. For many years Mr. Scherdin operated a threshing machine in this area. Later he became post office custodian and served 15 years prior to his retirement in 1941.

Mr. Scherdin and Mrs. Petra Gochenouer were married in 1922, since which time they had resided at 405 West Front St. Mr. Scherdin was to have been brought back home last Thursday, but a sudden turn for the worse in his condition made this impossible.

Surviving Mr. Scherdin are his wife, Petra; two stepsons, Bruce and Clarence Gochenouer, both of Omaha; and a half-sister, Mrs. Anna Hapke of Atlantic, Ia.
