Jack Schlapfer, 85, of Arlington, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, at the A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.

A memorial service was held Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington. Interment was in the Arlington Cemetery, with military graveside services provided by members of American Legion Post No. 71 and VFW Post No. 8332 of Arlington.

Jack Schlapfer was born Nov. 26, 1922, in rural Arlington to John and Tichia (Hall) Schlapfer. He was a lifelong resident of Arlington.

He was a 1941 graduate of Arlington High School.

He served in the United States Army during World War II from Feb. 24, 1943, until Nov. 15, 1945, and was stationed in the Panama Canal zone for 25 months.

On Sept. 6, 1946, he married Jane E. Thomas at Marysville, Kan.

He worked at Marshall Nurseries; drove truck for Hackbarth Trucking, Bell Creek and Arlington Oil, and later worked in maintenance for the Fremont Department of Utilities at the waste treatment plant.

Mr. Schlapfer was a member of the Arlington Community Church; was a life member of VFW Post No. 8332 of Arlington; was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 200 of Fremont and the Fremont Softball Umpires Association; and had retired from the Arlington Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Joann Schlapfer and Jim and Linda Schlapfer, all of Fremont; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Maynard Manka and mary and Russell Thomsen, all of Fremont; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter and Gloria Schlapfer of Henderson, Nev., and Albert and Marge Schlapfer of San Diego, Calif.; sister, Betty Frye of Arlington.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane, in January 1998; two sisters, Nina Schlapfer and Ann Dickmeyer; and six brothers, Herman, Richard, Clyde, Robert, William and Archie Schlapfer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Arlington Education Foundation and to the Arlington Volunteer Fire Department.
