C. J. SCHMIDT, VETERAN BUSINESS MAN, IS DEAD

C. J. Schmidt, an early-day banker and long-time insurance and real estate broker, died Monday at Memorial Community Hospital where he has been ill for a number of weeks. He was 82 years old.

Carl John Schmidt was born at Blair, July 17, 1886. He grew to manhood here and was in business here all of his adult life.

Older residents can remember the days of the State Bank which operated in the Huber building. He was an officer of the bank, along with his brother, the late Chris Schmidt.

During the great depression, the bank, like hundreds of others, failed and after the affairs of the business had been settled, he entered the Real Estate and Insurance business. He stayed in the same building the bank had occupied, moving to one of the upstairs offices where he did business for many years. Some time ago he moved his base of operations to west Washington Street where he officed with Roy I. Anderson, Blair attorney. He had planned to move again with Mr. Anderson to new offices in the former Legion Building, but became ill before the work was done and never saw his new quarters.

He married Miss Iola Miller, a Blair school teacher, on April 4, 1925. The couple lived their entire married life at 1507 South Street.

He is survived by his wife, Iola, and by a daughter, Carol Ann Kahler, of Vashon Island, Washington and by two grandchildren, Kip and Kim Kahler. Three brothers preceded him in death.

He had served his country in World War I and was a charter member of the Hain-Flynn Post of the American Legion. In 1965, Mr. Schmidt was among nineteen members who were honored for 47 years of membership.

Funeral services will be held at the Congregational Churchj today (Thursday) at 10 o’clock A.M. with the Rev. James Warn conducting the service. Burial, under the direction of the Campbell Mortuary, will be made in the Blair Cemetery.
