Curtis W. Schmidt, 83, of Arlington, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, at Nye Legacy rehabilitation center in Fremont.

Funeral sevices will be 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Arlington. Interment will be at St. Paul’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington, with the family receiving friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to services at the church.

Curtis William Schmidt was born Jan. 24, 1926, on the family farm to William and Amelia (Stork) Schmidt. He would live on the farm, located north of Arlington along the Elkhorn River, his entire life. From his father, he learned the ways to become a successful farmer.

He was baptized into the Lutheran faith in 1926 and was confirmed in 1939, all at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where he was a lifelong member. He held many offices in the church, and was also a lifelong choir member.

He graduated from Arlington High School in 1943, and was one of the players on the 1941 Class B boy’s state champion baseball team. He attended Boys State in Lincoln in 1942, sent there by the firefighters to learn about state government.

He married his bride of 56 years, Darleen E. Knecht, in June of 1953. The couple adopted two children.

He was a past president of the livestock feeders association, past president of the county extension office, ABS association, and was an avid bowler for more than 30 years. He loved to be around his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. He loved to garden and raise his livestock and crops, just to watch things grow. He touched the lives of many people through his acts of kindness and nonjudgmental attitude; he truly was a man of character. He enjoyed life to the fullest, which was evident by the smile he wore each and every time people met him.

He is survived by his wife, Darleen, of Arlington; son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Brenda Schmidt of Arlington; daughter, Barbara Albus of Fremont; two grandchildren; sister, Lillian Royuk of Arlington; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Schmidt, in World War II, and two sisters, Irma Royuk and Margaret Scheer.

Memorials are suggested to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
