Dwight Wubbenhorst, 80

Dwight Wubbenhorst, 80, of Herman died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010, in Arizona.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, at Herman Community Church in Herman. Interment will be in the Herman Cemetery.

Dwight Wubbenhorst was born Oct. 14, 1929, in Herman to Henry and Frances (Stanek) Wubbenhorst. He grew up on their farm next to Herman while attending Herman grade and high school, graduating in 1947. After high school, he attended Omaha University, and the University of Nebraska while continuing to farm.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War, receiving his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and later served as company clerk at Fitzsimmons Hospital in Denver, Colo. He was a member of the Herman American Legion.

After his service he continued farming and later, due to health problems, spent winters in Mesa, Ariz. There, he obtained a realtor's license and built and managed commercial property.

On Nov. 29, 1979, he was united in marriage to Helen Gubbels of Omaha. They shared hobbies of traveling (both domestically and abroad), gardening, and woodworking (furniture building). They enjoyed attending concerts, ranging from country music to classical.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Eldred Conrad, Sylvia Goeser, Catherine Gubbels, Rita Gubbels, Virginia Lickteig, Cyril and Therese Gubbels, and Mary Ann and Francis Koesters, all from Iowa.

He was preceded in death by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Peter Gubbels, Alvin Gubbels, Ambrose Gubbels, Rev. Richard Gubbels, Edmund Goeser, Cletus Lickteig, Sabina Conrad, Mabel Gubbels, and Minerva Gubbels.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
