“FIDDLE” SCHMIDT PASSES AWAY IN OMAHA

Ernest H. Schmidt, better known as “Fiddle,” a well-known former Fort Calhoun resident, and more recently of Omaha, passed away at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha on January 29th, following complication of a stroke. Funeral services were held at Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church Saturday, February 1st, with Rev. Keith Sackett officiating. Interment was made at the Fort Calhoun Cemetery, under the direction of Sievers Funeral Home. There will be Masonic graveside services.

“Fiddle” was born February 22, 1898 to Carl and Johanna Schmidt on a farm near Fort Calhoun. He lived much of his life in Fort Calhoun and was in the barbering business until World War II when he worked in Omaha for the railroad. Following that, he resumed barbering in Omaha.

Mr. Schmidt is survived by his wife, Anna, and two nieces, Eleanor Rasmussen of Red Oak, Iowa, and Thelma Meyers of Clairmont, California, among other nieces and nephews. Two brothers also survive, William H. of Fort Calhoun, and Carl of Fremont.

The Schmidts were members of the Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church and “Fiddle” was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star.
