#1-Pilot, January 23, 1929

Mrs. Arthur Layton, of Odell, Neb., who died in a hospital in Beatrice on Saturday morning, January 19th, was born in Fontanelle twenty-seven years ago as the youngest daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Christian Sick. She attended the public school here until her parents moved to Sterling, Neb., where she later completed her education. After teaching in the public schools in the South Platte country for several years she was married to Arthur Layton on June 9th, 1926.

The happy couple resided on a farm near Odell for several years until an illness brought on by an attack of the flu necessitated her confinement in the hospital where a child was born to them which joined the mother on the journey to the Great Beyond.

The funeral was held from the Fontanelle Lutheran church at 1 p.m. on Tuesday amid the participation of a large circle of relatives and friends with the Rev. Wm. Goede officiating. A local quartette sang several appropriate selections and the floral tributes were very profuse and beautiful. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot in the cemetery near the church.

The remaining immediate relatives who mourn her loss are the bereaved husband; her parents, Rev. and Mrs. Christian Sick, Mary and Robert Sick of Fremont; and Mrs. Ray Gardner of Valley, Neb.; Theodore Sick of Lincoln and Alfred Sick of Blair. They have the sympathy of a large circle of relatives and friends of their home community as well as of this place.

AL SICK’S SISTER DIED AT BEATRICE

Al Sick, reporter on the Tribune of this city, was called to Beatrice last Saturday on account of the serious illness of his sister, Clara, Mrs. Arthur Layton, who lived on a farm near Odell, Neb. She was unconscious when he arrived and death followed shortly after his arrival.

She had had the flu and a baby girl was born a few days before her death. The baby died Friday and the death occurred Saturday. The baby was the only grandchild of Rev. and Mrs. Christian Sick, for many years pastor of the Lutheran church at Fontanelle, now living in Fremont, and her birth had brought great joy to them.

The body was taken to Fremont Monday and to Fontanelle yesterday, where the funeral was held at 1 o’clock in the new church recently dedicated. Burial was in the Fontanelle cemetery, where her eldest brother was buried last year.

Clara Sick was born at Fontanelle, Feb. 8th, 1900, so was almost 29 years of age. She was a graduate of the State Normal college at Peru and taught school for six years prior to her marriage to Arthur Layton, on June 9th, 1926, in Fremont.

Besides her aged parents she is survived by two sisters, Miss Mary Sick of Fremont, and Mrs. Ray Gardener of Valley, Neb., and three brothers, Robert, of Fremont, Theodore, of Lincoln and Alfred, of this city.

Her death was felt very keenly by Mr. Sick for he was the baby of the family and she was next older than he. They were playmates and chums and even though they have been separated in recent years, her early death is a great shock and sorrow to him.
