Sgt. Maj. William E. Evans, 76

Retired Army Sgt. Maj. William E. Evans, 76, formerly of Blair, died April 3, 2005, in Harker Heights, Texas. Funeral services were Thursday, April 7, at Killeen Memorial Park in Killeen, Texas. William Edward Evans was born Nov. 7, 1928, to William and Bernice Evans. He was raised and educated in Arkansas City, Kan.

He joined the U.S. Army, and served during World War II, Vietnam and the Korean War. During his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star with V Device; the Meritorious Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal; Army Good Conduct Medal; Marine Good Conduct Medal; WWII Victory Medal; Army Reserve Achievement Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Silver Hourglass; NCO Professional Development Ribbon/4; Army Service Ribbon; Vietnam Campaign Medal; and the Army Presidential Unit Citation. He retired from the Army and joined the Civil Service, where he was employed for 25 years. At the time of his death, he had served the Army for 39 years, 11 months, and 29 days. He had been a member of the Harker Heights community for 24 years, and was a member of the DAV Chapter 29 of Harker Heights.

He is survived by his wife, Willie Mae; daughters, Cathy Hubbard of Omaha, Wilma Thorne of Killeen, and Elizabeth Evans of Harker Heights; brothers, Larry Evans of Arkansas City, Kan., and Dale Evans of New Orleans, La.; sister, Ruth Huber of Battle Mountain,N.Y.; and five grandchildren.
