N. P. NIELSEN, DIED FOLLOWING COLLAPSE

HAD BEEN WORKING IN HOT CORNFIELD DURING AFTERNOON

RESIDENT OF COUNTY SINCE 1883

Niels Peter Nielsen, 78 years of age, died suddenly at his home in the Washington community, on Friday evening, July 23. He had spent the hot afternoon working in his son’s cornfield, and was overcome by heat exhaustion to the extent that a passing neighbor found it necessary to bring him to his home. He recovered sufficiently to give the impression that the crisis had passed, but died soon afterward, following a collapse.

Born at Veddum, Jylland, Denmark, on December 28, 1865, Mr. Nielsen was nearly 79 years of age at the time of his passing. In the old country, he was employed in farm work. He came to America in 1883, locating immediately in Washington County, on a farm near the Prairie View cemetery north of Washington village.

For the past three years, Mr. Nielsen had lived in retirement in a home in Washington.

On January 20, 1903, he was married to Miss Martine Jung, also from Denmark. To their union were born four children, all of whom survive. They are Christian Nielsen, Mrs. Hulda Ludwig, and Agnete Larsen, all of Omaha and Hjalmer (Elmer) Nielsen on the old home place. There are also four grandchildren and four brothers and a sister, left to mourn his loss. Among the brothers are Niels and Chris Nielsen of Washignton, and the sister, Mrs. Trine Rosenkilde, also lives near Washington. The widow also survives.

Mr. Nielsen was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church of his native country. He had taken an active part in the local mission at Washington.

A short funeral service was conducted at the Nielsen home on Monday, at two o’clock, with Rev. P.C. Jensen, pastor of the Washington Community Church, officiating. Mrs. Leona Hansen of Blair sang several hymns. Commitment was made at the Prairie View Cemetery.

Pallbearers were A.C. Andersen, Andrew Andersen, John Johnson, Bertel Bertelsen, William Peters, and Albert Hansen, all of the Washington vicinity.
