GEO. ROHWER PASSES OVER

SUCCUMBS AT 10 O’CLOCK THIS MORNING AT HIS HOME IN FT. CALHOUN

The end came peacefully at 10 o’clock this morning for George Rohwer, sr., at his home in Fort Calhoun following an extended illness. He suffered the first light stroke some four years ago, but had been confined to his bed but about five weeks.

No arrangements have been made for the funeral yet, awaiting word from a son, Carl, who is an irrigation engineer in Colorado. The balance of the children all live in and around Ft. Calhoun.

Mr. Rohwer was born on the old farm July 13, 1861, so was 66 years of age last July. His father was the late Hans J. Rohwer, who lived about a mile north of Ft. Calhoun, where Harry now lives. He grew to manhood there and was united in marriage to Miss Kate Beekman on June 7th, 1888.

Seven children were born to this union, three daughters, Clara, Mrs. E.S.B. Giseman; Celia, who lives at home; and Helen, Mrs. E.T. Jipp, of this city; and four sons, Harry, who lives on the old farm; Carl, of Colorado; Albert and George, Jr., of Ft. Calhoun.

Besides his wife he leaves, also, three sisters, Mrs. F.H. Matthiesen, of Los Angeles, California; Anna and Ella Rohwer, and one brother, Harry.

Mr. Rohwer built a beautiful home in Ft. Calhoun and moved there about three years ago. He had served the county as a member of the board of county supervisors for several years, also as a member of the school board for some thirty years.

George Rohwer, Sr.

Funeral services for George Rohwer, St., who died at his home here Jan. 11, were held at the residence Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Barton. In addition to many friends of the immediate vicinity, numbers were present from Blair and other parts of the county.

The departure of Mr. Rohwer from us leaves a vacancy in the community which will not be filled. Born 66 years ago the 13th of last July on the farm where he had since continuously resided until moving to their beautiful new home in Ft. Calhoun three years ago, Mr. Rohwer was a very part of the community. Next to his family and his extensive farming operations Mr. Rohwer’s interests centered in the local public school. He served on the school board continuously for more than thirty years, most of the time as moderator. He also served as a member of the board of county supervisors several years ago. As a young man he spent some time in Germany attending school in that country, the native land of his parents. On June 7, 1888, he was married to Miss Kate Beckman, who survives him, as do seven children: Harry, Mrs. E.S.B. Geesaman, George, Albert and Celiea of Ft. Calhoun; Carl of Fort Collins, Colo., and Mrs. E.T. Jipp of Blair. Two sisters, Misses Ella and Anna, and one brother, H.H., reside in Ft. Calhoun, and a sister, Mrs. F.H. Matthiesen, in Los Angeles, Calif.

Mr. Rohwer was a man of the true pioneer type—of highest integrity, strong character and individuality—the type that laid the sure and solid foundation for the western empire. His passing brings sharply to our minds how rapidly these pioneers of the west are leaving us, and how rapid have been the material changes about us since these hardy men broke the way for multitudes to follow. May our superstructure be as well built as their foundation was well laid.
