Pastor Robert Berthelsen was born on April 19, 1921 and died on December 1, 2007 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Pastor Berthelsen is survived by his wife, Audrey. He is also survived by son Jim of San Mateo, Calif.; daughter Deb (Bruce) Aldag of Schleswig, Iowa; and son-in-law, Roger Anderson of Long Beach, Calif. He has 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Pastor Berthelsen graduated in 1942 with a BA from Dana Lutheran College, Blair, Neb. and in 1949 with a B. Div. from Trinity Seminary, Blair, Neb.

He was ordained July 3, 1949 and was called to serve as pastor at St. John’s//Oregon, Wis., and Brooklyn/Brooklyn, Wis. His second call was as pastor of Kingo/Milwaukee. In 1962, Pastor Berthelsen was called to serve Sheridan/Lincoln. He then served as pastor of Church of Hope/Broomfield, Colo. He served as an Assistant to the Bishop with the Central District.

Reverend Robert O. Berthelsen, 86, of Lincoln died on Saturday (12/1/2007). Born on April 19, 1921 in Omaha, Nebraska the family moved to Chicago, Illinois when Bob was ten. Bob returned to Nebraska in 1939 and was a graduate of Dana College and Trinity Seminary. He served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946 with duty in Franc, Belgium, Holland and Germany. During his years of service he received a Battlefield Commission and was awarded a Bronze Star. Upon his return from military duty, Bob’s life was focused on family, service to the community and over forty years in the ministry.

“Pastor Bob” served Lutheran parishes in Wisconsin, Nebraska and Colorado, including Sheridan Lutheran Church in Lincoln where he was the senior pastor from 1962 to 1975. He retired in 1988 when he was the assistant to the Bishop of the Central District of the American Lutheran Church in Denver, Colorado. In his retirement years, Bob served five interim ministries in Colorado and one in Utah.

After residing in Broomfield, Colorado for twenty-four years, Bob and his wife Audrey returned to Lincoln in 1999. They settled at Carriage Glen and Bob enjoyed making new friends, renewing old friendships, playing pinochle, celebrating family milestones and singing in the Nebraska Christian Men’s Chorus and the Lincoln Senior Chorus.

Bob was preceded in death by his daughter Barbara Anderson, brother-in-law Chuck Madsen, sister-in-law Marge Betker, parents Niels Olaf and Marth Berthelsen and step-mother May Berthelsen.

Survivors include Audrey, his wife of sixty-two years, son Jim Berthelsen of San Mateo, California, daughter and son-in-law Deb and Bruce Aldag of Schleswig, Iowa, son-in-law Roger Anderson of Long Beach, California, foster daughter and husband Pat and Stan Larson of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, sister Marge Madsen of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, brother-in-law and wife Ted and Carol Betker of Montecito, California, seven grandchildren, two great-granddaughters and many kind and caring extended family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at Sheridan Lutheran Church on Monday, December 10th at 3:00 pm, preceded by a private interment service for the family.
