#1-27 Jan., 1902 - The Pilot - Grace Sutherland

The funeral of Miss Grace Sutherland took place from the Baptist church last Sunday, Rev. Tingley officiating. Miss Grace was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Sutherland, and was a bright young girl of fourteen summers. She was born January 25, 1888, and died January 23, 1902. For some time she had been under the doctor’s care, and about two weeks ago went to the Central hospital, Omaha, to undergo an operation. On Thursday morning the doctors planned the operation and began to administer chloroform when immediately she screamed for her sister, Aimee, who was with her, and sank back dead. The case seems to have been one of clear fright and the case is a very sad one. In their sad affliction, the bereaved family have the sympathy of many friends who but a few days ago scarcely realized that the little girl was even out of ordinary good health. The body was brought from Omaha Friday afternoon and laid at rest in the Blair cemetery Sunday where a large concourse of friends followed them to their last resting place.

Miss Grace Sutherland had been under the doctor’s care for some little time, and though not severely ill was not improving so she was taken to the Central hospital in Omaha about two weeks ago for treatment. An operation was advised and last Thursday morning preparations were made for the same. When the attending physician began to administer the chloroform she gave a scream and fell back dead, apparently from fright. Her sister Aimee was the only member of the family with her at the time as the doctor had told them her heart and lungs were perfectly sound and no danger need be feared. The body was brought up here on Friday and the funeral held to the Baptist church at two o’clock last Sunday. Rev. C. E. Tingley officiating. It was a bitter cold day but a large number of friends were in attendance, her brother, Will, coming all the way from Shawnee, Okla. Mrs. C. M. Lynn, a sister, was also up from Omaha. Miss Grace was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Sutherland and would have been fourteen years old the next day, Friday. Her death was an unusually sad one as she had not been critically ill, only slightly ailing, and the operation was only advised as a means of eradicating the difficulty, not as a present necessity. The many friends of the family here and in the Sutherland neighborhood sympathize deeply with them in this sad bereavement.
